Robinsonville was once a small southern town, nestled in between the cotton fields of the Delta. No one had heard of us, nor even knew we existed. In 1990 all of that changed when the Mississippi legislature legalized gaming for the state. In 1991 The residents of Tunica County approved gaming without opposition and Mississippi River Amusement Corporation filed the first notice of intent to apply for a gaming license in Tunica County.
On October 19, 1992, Tunica's first casino, Splash, opened its doors, at Mhoon Landing, and our little town changed. The 2 way roads were converted into 4 lane highways. The little town that was use to seeing the tractors pulling plows and a few cars on the road were now seeing traffic that we could have never imagined. Our city name even changed.
The community was originally named Robinsonville, but the name was changed in 2003. Tunica Resorts is an unincorporated community located in northern Tunica County, Mississippi, United States, north of the county seat of Tunica. Locals still refer to the town by this name. The community is situated mostly between the Mississippi River and U.S. Highway 61.
Tunica Resorts is, as the name implies, home to nine casino resorts. The use of the name "Tunica" by the resorts, despite the fact that since 1995 they were all located in Robinsonville and not Tunica proper, led to the name change to reduce confusion by tourists. Lacking the structure of an organized city or town, Tunica Resorts consists mainly of casinos and cotton fields, with few permanent residents living in the community. Despite this, Tunica Resorts is the third largest casino-gambling destination in the United States, as measured by gaming revenue, behind Las Vegas, Nevada and Atlantic City, New Jersey. Its casinos attract gamblers mainly from nearby Memphis, Tennessee, but also draw visitors from Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, Missouri, Georgia, Illinois and Kentucky.
Regardless of the name change we still live in Robinsonville, and are very proud of our town.
